Central Ohio IT Professionals "Giving Back"
This January issue of our GroundWork group eNewsletter is dedicated to the dozens of volunteer IT Professionals who support nonprofit organizations through our Board Matching and Development Program, a WIN-WIN offering designed to provide service to our Members while presenting an opportunity for volunteerism. Since its inception five years ago, the program has matched and placed over 70 IT business professionals onto local nonprofit boards of directors.

Most readers of this eNewsletter are aware that the GroundWork group mission is to strengthen the impact of nonprofit organizations by helping them leverage technology to build capacity, gain efficiencies and focus on serving their missions. Our Board Matching and Development Program supports this mission in a very unique way through IT oversight and leadership at the board level.

The typical nonprofit board of directors is made up of volunteer leaders specializing in accounting, law, finance, auditing, community relations and/or corporate philanthropy. Our Board Matching and Development Program adds a technology perspective to nonprofit boards, allowing IT Professionals to assist these other professional volunteers by keeping a watchful eye on how the organization is leveraging technology, promoting technology enhancements and encouraging the inclusion of technology in strategic planning.

IT Professionals are aligned with organizations that they have a sincere, passionate interest in supporting. We believe this is a significant part of the "Matching" aspect of the program. We look for individuals that truly believe in and support the mission of the organization with which they are working. We provide orientation courses and access to additional resources to prepare them for serving on a nonprofit board and how to be an effective contributor. We ask these volunteers, while serving as board members, to create a Technology Committee, to document a Technology Plan that aligns with the organization's Strategic Plan and to align budget resources to support these initiatives.

The concept of the program was developed by former GroundWork group Board Chair Angelo Mazzocco and GroundWork group co-founder Tony Wells while GroundWork group was in its incubation stages at United Way of Central Ohio. While it is difficult to determine an exact dollar value the program has contributed, we believe that organizations have saved tens of thousands of dollars and have realized improved operational efficiencies through the efforts of these volunteers.

GroundWork group would like recognize and thank those individuals who are actively serving and the organizations they are supporting.

If your nonprofit organization seeks IT leadership for your board of directors or you are an IT professional interested in placement onto a nonprofit board, please contact Tom Guy at tguy@groundworkgroup.org or 614-884-7780, ext. 111.

As an additional benefit to our Members and readers, GroundWork group has implemented an "Alert" email service. When a critical technical issue arises, and we feel our constituents need to know about it quickly, GroundWork group will broadcast an email Alert. Our intent is to directly communicate only mission critical issues so that you are informed as soon as possible.

For example, this past Friday, we sent out our first Alert to notify of the "Downandup" worm. We consider these Alerts important enough for you to pass on to the IT staff member within your organization or to talk with your IT professional about what the Alert would mean for your organization. If you ever have any questions about our Alerts, please don't hesitate to call.

More information on our most recent Alert topic, the "Downandup" worm, can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 or http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32/Conficker
